The Story of Jack’s

Jack’s Bar takes its name from Jack O’Neill, the legendary founder of the original hotel. According to local lore, a young Jack O’Neill was herding sheep on a hill near Maghera when he stumbled upon a crock of silver. With this lucky find, he built the first hostelry here in 1760.

Though generations have passed and the property has changed hands many times, Jack’s Bar still carries the spirit of its past — you can feel it in the very walls.

In 2017, the bar was given a modern facelift, adding an extra-large screen that’s now famous for sports nights, and a stage where the best local musicians perform every Saturday evening. The cocktail and gin bars were another welcome addition, offering a premium selection of drinks crafted to perfection.

The main hotel bar, Helena’s Snug, is situated just off Helena’s Bistro and is open daily from 12 noon to 11 PM. It provides a relaxed setting for guests to enjoy drinks and casual dining throughout the day, complementing Jack’s Bar perfectly with its warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Jack’s Bar is especially famous for its Sunday Carvery, served every week from 12–4 PM — a long-standing local favourite.
